Please provide figures for the number of murders in England and Wales from 1922 to present.

I would also like the figures for gun use in the commission of offences for the same period.

Thank you for your enquiry on the number of murders recorded in England and Wales from 1922 to present. Unfortunately, we do not hold the level of detail you require for the time period you are interested in. Appendix Table A4, published alongside our quarterly crime statistics bulletin, provides an offence breakdown of homicides from the year ending March 2003 to the year ending March 2018, including murder. However, the historical crime dataset published by the Home Office, which goes back to 1898, only provides data for the headline category of homicide.

The latest data on offences involving firearms are published in our weapons data tables for the year ending March 2017. Table 1 shows the proportion of homicides where a firearm was used, from the year ending March 2003 to the year ending March 2017. For 1990 to 2002, you can find figures on the number of homicides involving use of a firearm in Table 2.01 of Crime in England and Wales 2001/2002: Supplementary Volume.

Homicides and offences involving weapons recorded by the police are supplied to us by the Home Office, who may be better placed to answer your query. Their email address is: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.
