Thank you for your enquiry on the number of fixed penalty notices issued for stationary idling of a vehicle. We do not hold any data on fixed penalty notices, however, the Home Office do collect and publish data on fixed penalty notices issued for motoring offences. The latest published tables can be accessed using the following link: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/561976/fixed-penalty-notices-police-powers-procedures-hosb1516-tables.ods

Table FPN_02 shows fixed penalty notices issued by offence type. Vehicle idling would fall under the offence category “Lighting and noise offences”, and you can see within the table that there were 7,831 fixed penalty notices issued for lighting and noise offences in the calendar year 2015.

Please note that the Home Office do not break down the offences further and do not hold the information at a lower level. Therefore, the Home Office do not hold the exact number of offences for vehicle idling alone. If you have any further queries, it may be best to contact the Home Office directly. They can be reached at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.
