Can you give statistics of deaths in care homes and hospitals that were not natural from 1999?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Mortality statistics are compiled using the information provided on the death certificate. Cause of death is coded using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). From 2001 onwards, ICD version 10 (ICD-10) has been used to code underlying cause of death, whilst from 1979-2000 ICD version 9 (ICD-9) was used. Please note, causes of death between different versions of the ICD are not directly comparable.

We do not publish statistics of deaths by council household fires. We could produce an ad-hoc table for the number of deaths which occurred in the home, where the underlying cause was exposure to smoke, fire and flames (ICD-10 codes X00-X09) or accidents caused by smoke fire and flames (ICD-9 codes E890-E899). However, we cannot distinguish if the home was a council house.

Deaths that are not natural are assigned to the ICD-10 chapter XX External causes of morbidity and mortality (ICD-10 codes U509, V01-Y98).

Deaths registered by place of death and ICD-10 chapter are available in Deaths registered in England and Wales (Series DR). For 2006 to 2014 this is available in table 12 and for 2015 and 2016 this is available in table 8: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables

Data for deaths by place of occurrence for previous years could be provided as an ad-hoc table, however these are not comparable across different versions of the ICD. Special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
