Thank you for your enquiry.

We produce mortality statistics for England and Wales, using the information provided when a death is registered. Underlying cause of death is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).

There is no specific ICD-10 code for deaths to commotio cordis. The death would likely be assigned an underlying cause code from chapter XX (External causes of morbidity and mortality) and also a nature of injury code known as a secondary cause code, which in this case would be S26.9 (Injury of heart, unspecified).

For example a death that occurred during a sporting event may be assigned the primary code W21 (Striking against or struck by sports equipment) or W22 (Striking against or struck by other objects) and the secondary code S26.9 (Injury of heart, unspecified). We do not routinely publish primary and secondary causes of death together.

More information about secondary causes is available from section 9.2 of our user guide to mortality statistics: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/methodologies/userguidetomortalitystatisticsjuly2017#cause-of-death-coding

The total number of deaths assigned the secondary code S26.9, broken down by age group, are available from table 6 of our deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR) publication: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables

2013 to 2016 mortality data for England and Wales is available from our explorable dataset, and can be filtered by by geography, sex, age and underlying cause: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73

Prior to this, mortality data by underlying cause of death and age is available in table 5 of our deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR) publication: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables
