You asked

I am looking for statistics for the mode of birth for twins and breech babies in the UK, as recent as possible. Specifically, the percentage of twin pregnancies resulting in caesarean section vs vaginal birth, and the percentage of breech presenting babies born by caesarean section vs vaginal delivery.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Following a search of our records available to date I can confirm that we do not hold the precise information you have requested.

We are responsible for publishing births statistics for births registered in England and Wales, but not Scotland or Northern Ireland. The most recent year for which births statistics are currently available is 2018. Figures are compiled from information supplied when births are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. Mode of birth or position of a baby are not among the particulars recorded.

Statistics that we produce on maternities with multiple births can be found in tables 13 to 16 of our Births Characteristics publication.

NHS Digital may be better placed to help you, as they produce maternity statistics, which include information on delivery method. They can be contacted at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.
