I am trying to get mid-year population estimates at the level of local authorities for the years from 1982 onwards by sex and age groups. In particular, I am interested in two age groups: 16-24 and 24-64. This is no problem for the years 1992 onwards using the data available on nomisweb. For the years 1981-1991, I was hoping to calculate the 16-24 population by adding up population under age 1, aged 1-4, aged 5-9, aged 10-14, aged 15-19, and aged 20-24 and subtracting population aged 0-15. This would have allowed me to get the actual population count without having to impose assumptions on age shares within each quiennial age group over time. However, there is no data for the population aged 0-15, even though the category is available for selection. Is it possible to either get the data on people aged 16-24 directly or the data on population aged 0-15 for the years 1981 – 1991?

Thank you for your request.

We have published age tables for 1981 and 1982 to 1990 and they can be found in the National Archives. The links to the specific table are here:

However, these are old geographies and to compare them with more recent ones you will have to use look-up tables from the ONS Geography Portal.
