Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales. These are driven by information collected on the death certificate. We do not hold any information on injuries due to the Meningitis C vaccine. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency may be able to provide this information. They can be contacted at info@mhra.gov.uk.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or,  b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury.

There is no specific ICD10 code for deaths due to or involving the Meningitis C vaccine. ICD10 code Y58.9 is used to code death where an adverse effect to "Other and unspecified bacterial vaccines" caused or contributed to the death. At this time, there are no deaths where ICD10 code Y85.9 is mentioned on the death certificate. This information covers deaths that have been registered from 2001 to present.
