You asked

Do you have numbers of maternal deaths by country of birth? Or maternal deaths by woman's country of birth and cause of birth?

I am particularly interested in maternal deaths of women born in Latin American countries.

Thank you for your request.

You have made a Freedom of Information Request asking for maternal deaths by country of birth or maternal deaths by woman's country of birth and cause of birth. Internationally a maternal death is defined as a death of a woman during or up to six weeks (42 days) after the end of pregnancy (whether the pregnancy ended by termination, miscarriage or a birth, or was an ectopic pregnancy) through causes associated with, or exacerbated by, pregnancy (World Health Organisation 2010). To provide data to meet this international definition the MBRRACE-UK programme of work is responsible for the national Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) within the United Kingdom: https://www.npeu.ox.ac.uk/mbrrace-uk

We do hold deaths registered to women where a pregnancy-related cause is listed on the death certificate and is then coded as the underlying cause of death (the O codes in the International Classification of Diseases) which can be found in Table 5.15 for years up until 2014 http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/mortality-statistics--deaths-registered-in-england-and-wales--series-dr-/index.html or using our explorable dataset for 2015 onwards https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73

Other special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate). If you would like further information, please contact the team directly at: vsob@ons.gov.uk.
