Thank you for your enquiry.

Birth statistics represent births that occur and are then registered in England and Wales. Figures are compiled from information supplied when births are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. A birth to a mother whose usual residence is outside of England and Wales would be included in total figures for England and Wales but excluded from any sub-division of England and Wales as they are assigned to the mother’s country of usual residence. However, they are identified as a separate group in area tables (usual residence outside England and Wales).

We do not have information that specifies if the parent(s) are EU immigrants.

Within the parents’ country of birth release, we publish the number of live births split by the country of birth of mother from 2008 to 2017 (table 1). This table specifies if the mother was born outside of the United Kingdom or within a country that is part of the European Union. Totals are provided in the tables to enable the calculation of percentages. Table 3 contains live births split by the country of birth of the mother and the father, where this information is available, from 2009 to 2017. These data can be found here: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/datasets/parentscountryofbirth

Following a search of our records, we do not have the same data available prior to 2008.

However, we may be able to create what you have requested, or something similar, as a bespoke analysis. Any such analysis would be outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate. If this is something you would be interested in, please contact vsob@ons.gov.uk, for any births related enquiries, so that we may discuss your enquiry further. We publish estimates of the number of people who migrated in and out of the UK – these estimates are the flow of people into and out of the UK. The latest tables are from 2017 and can be found in:

International Passenger Survey 4.06 Country of Birth by Citizenship
International Passenger Survey 4.07 Sex by Age by Citizenship
International Passenger Survey 4.08 Sex by Age by Country of Birth

Previous years are available from the same webpages.

We also publish estimates of the Population of the UK by country of birth and nationality the latest being from July 2017 to June 2018; previous years are available from the same webpage. These are estimates of the stock of population and are drawn from different data sources to the flow mentioned above.

For estimates of population of the UK by country of birth and nationality by age we would need to do a special extract and tabulation of the data as it is not published. Any data ordered is subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate. Please contact us directly, with a details of specific countries, on pop.info@ons.gov.uk but please be aware there may be a charge. You can find information on our charging policy here.

We do not have any data about when immigrants were granted British citizenship or ‘settled status’ and their age when it was granted. It is possible the Home Office may be able to help with this.
