Please could you provide me with the number of registered charities as of 2022 in:
- England
- Wales
- Scotland
- Northern Ireland

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request.
We produce an annual publication called UK Business: Activity, size and location. This publication breaks down the number of UK Businesses (registered for VAT and/or PAYE) by geography, employment size-band, industry and legal status. It is created using an extract of the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) taken on 13 March 2021.
The IDBR does hold data on registered charities but only those registered for VAT and/or PAYE with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). We can produce analysis through our bespoke ad hoc services based on the charities data we hold, however please note as mentioned above this would not encapsulate all UK Registered charities. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources, and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact idbrdas@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
