Question 18 on the Census contains a written field for Main Languages other than English. On the data available, the codes 7, 8, 12, 18, 20, 21 & 22 refer to groups of languages. I am requesting the precise answers to question 18 for each ward within Leeds.

Thank you for your additional freedom of information request.

The 'Create a custom dataset' tool allows the downloading multiple combinations of data for wards within Leeds.

Sometimes we need to make changes to data if it is possible to identify individuals. This is known as statistical disclosure control (SDC). All census data is subject to SDC and in some instances it may be necessary to collapse categories, raise geographical levels or introduce minimum population thresholds to achieve this.

Because of this, detailed 'Main Language' at ward level is only available for 26 categories. However, the associated download 'Main Languages spoken in Leeds 2021' shows that 0.3% of usual residents aged over 3 in Leeds local authority, have Tigrinya as their main language (2,042 people). This dataset was downloaded from Nomis. Nomis is a service run on behalf of ONS by the University of Durham.  Please find instructions for using Nomis in the associated download 'Nomis Navigation Instructions 2021'.

Feel free to contact Census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk should you require any assistance with using NOMIS or have any other queries about this data.
