Thank you for your request.
Estimates of the number of people in employment by country of birth (i.e. UK/non-UK born) at UK, regional and local authority level are available from the Annual Population Survey (APS) via Nomis (https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/). They can be accessed as follows:
On the Nomis homepage, select 'Query data' under 'Data Downloads'.
Select 'Annual Population Survey/Labour Force Survey' then select 'Current' then choose 'annual population survey (Dec 2004 to Dec 2019)'.
On the next page you can create your data extract by making appropriate selections from the 'Geography', 'Date' and 'Variable' categories:
- Under 'Geography' you can choose 'City of London' from the 'local authorities: district / unitary (as of April 2020)' category and 'United Kingdom' from the 'countries' category.
- Under 'Date' tick whichever 12-month period(s) you are interested in (the latest available data are for the 12 months ending December 2019).
- Under 'Variable' choose the 'Country of birth by white/ethnic minority' category and then you can tick whichever options you are interested in.
Once you've made your selections you can download the data in the format of your choice.
It is important to note that these estimates are by place of residence and so, because very few people live in the City of London, most of the data at this level are suppressed. In addition, we do not hold these estimates by industry and this would need to be created as part of our bespoke service. Such a service would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate.
A bespoke analysis very similar to your request is already published on our website at the following link:
These estimates are workplace-based so they are different to the estimates published on Nomis, but they may better meet your needs. Unfortunately the data only go up to 2018 so, if you would like to enquire about obtaining the 2019 estimates, please contact the customer services team of ONS's Social Surveys Division at socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk.
Another route would be to access the anonymised LFS datasets at the UK Data Service if you are able to run your own analysis. Data can be downloaded free of charge for non-commercial purposes but if charges are applicable, you will be notified during the ordering process. Details of how to access the data can be found here:
