You asked

Could I please request the following:

Number of children in household cross tabbed against social class

Number of children in household cross tabbed against household income

It looks like you should be able to provide this data based on what I've found from the Labour Force Survey

I would ideally like both sets of data as granular as possible, so:

  • breaking down "3 or more" children as far as possible

  • break out social class into AB C1 C2 D E

  • break household income down as granularly as possible

Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, the information requested is not held by the Office for National Statistics.

With regards the first part of your request 'number of children in household cross tabbed against social class', unfortunately, social class is not a variable that we use. The closest variable to it would be one on National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC). NS-SEC gives a constructed measure of employment relations and conditions of occupations, rather than specifically social class. There is not a household NS-SEC variable, only for the individual person.

For the second part of your request 'number of children in household cross tabbed against household income', there is no household income variable available and there would be numerous methodological issues with attempting to sum the incomes from all individuals in the household. Should you wish to discuss further what information may be available for this part of the request, either by request or by commissioning an ad-hoc release, please contact matthew.penfold@ons.gov.uk
