You asked

Please could you provide information on household income distribution in percentile (or decile) groups for Greater London for the year 2011. Alternatively, household income distribution by income bands with small enough intervals would also be helpful.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Regional estimates of household income are available within the Effects of Taxes and Benefits (ETB) release which is derived from the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCF), this is an annual survey of approximately 5,000 private UK households. In order to ensure the sample size is sufficient at a regional level it's necessary to produce a three year average. The latest published data are for the financial year 2015/16.

Within the link below, table 34 contains average incomes, taxes and benefits by Country and Region from 2013/14 to 2015/16 (column H contains estimates for London). Previous years estimates are also available within the below link:

Average income, taxes and benefits by quintile and decile groups, along with estimates by household type, are available within the above linked tables. However, these estimates are only available for the UK and the decile and quintile group income estimates are ranked by equivalised disposable income.

We could look at producing a table of average incomes taxes and benefits by banded income groups of all households, by banded gross or disposable income, however, the sample size would not be sufficient to produce this for London and for UK estimates the bands would likely need to be in £10,000 increments for a sufficient sample size.

DWP produce The Family Resources Survey (FRS), which has a sample size of approximately 20,000 private UK households. Income estimates produced from the FRS use The Survey of Personal Incomes (SPI), which is an administrative dataset, to adjust the top of the distribution as both the FRS and LCF surveys under-report the number of individuals with very high incomes. I would recommend contacting DWP as, depending on sample sizes, they might be able to produce estimates that align more closely to your original request. Contact: team.hbai@dwp.gsi.gov.uk.
