I am interested in finding out the information regarding hospital acquired pneumonia.
I would like to know the amount recorded for the year 2019.
I tried the NHS site but got no information on the site there.

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
The information collected at death registration does not tell us if a disease was acquired in hospital or before the patient was admitted.
Please find below a link to the number of death registrations where pneumonia was recorded as the underlying cause of death and place of occurrence was a hospital. Figures are for England and Wales combined, based on deaths registered between 2001 and 2018.

Death registrations for 2019 are still being finalised and will be available in July 2020.
