Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of deaths data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Whilst we receive headline mortality data for Northern Ireland and Scotland, we do not receive a breakdown by cause.

Mortality data for 2017 to 2021 in England and Wales

We publish the Deaths Registered Series annually which provides a breakdown by selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death in England and Wales. Using the previous release tab data is available from 2012 to 2021.

All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2019 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

There are numerous ICD-10 codes attributed to heart related deaths, therefore I have provided in the attached NOMIS Output leading causes of death involving the heart.

Our NOMIS webservice can also provide a breakdown of further breakdown of causes of death by ICD-10 code of your choosing for England and Wales, from 2013 to 2021.

Mortality data for 2022 in England and Wales

We have not yet conducted full analysis of deaths in 2022 as the data is still provisional.

However, we publish deaths by leading cause in our Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales.

If this does not meet your needs, we can produce deaths by specific ICD-10 code as a bespoke request. This service is outside of the Freedom of Information Act and is subject to disclosure controls, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS charging policy.
