You asked

I'd like to know how many people died from heart attack and stroke in the first 6 months of 2021 vs the same period of 2019?

we said

Thank you for your request.

When a death is registered, all the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases Tenth Revision (ICD-10), the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2020 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. Stroke is coded under the ICD-10 code 'I64', Cardiac Arrest is coded under 'I46'.

We have published mortality data by leading cause groups split by age up to 2020 in our death registered series. We have also published annual mortality data by cause from 2013-2020 is available as part of our explorable dataset on our NOMIS webservice. This explorable dataset can be used to search for annual deaths by ICD codes I64 and I46 for 2019. Please note, this information is not available six-month intervals.

Please see the following instructions for our NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age – All ages or 5 year age bands.

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). I64 and I46

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Deaths from cardiac arrest and stroke deaths between January to June for 2019 and 2021 is available to order as bespoke analysis. We would advise consulting with the Health Data customer service desk, who will be able to discuss your request further. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

As the requested information is available via another route, Section 21(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
