We said

Thank you for your request. Please see the following answers to your questions.

We hold mortality and life expectancy data for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

1. The main causes of death in Sheffield

Deaths by age, sex, cause and local area (national, regional, local authority and middle layer super output area) for 2013 to 2019 are available to download via our NOMIS website. This is an explorable data service, where data can be adapted to your interests.

2. Incidence of cancer spatially across Sheffield's wards

Unfortunately, we do not hold cancer incidence data. NHS Digital may be better placed to help with this. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

The number of deaths by ward in England from 2000 to 2017 are available via the following link to a user requested dataset, which may be of interest: Number of deaths by ward, England, 2000 to 2017. An update of this information to include data up to 2019 is available to request as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

3. The incidence of cardiovascular disease spatially across Sheffield

Unfortunately, we also do not hold cardiovascular incidence data. Similarly, NHS Digital may be better placed to help with this.

4. Healthy life expectancy spatially across Sheffield's wards

Life expectancy data by local area is available via the following link: Life Expectancy at Birth and at Age 65 (national, regional and local areas) in England and Wales: 2012 to 2014. This is our latest release showing trends for England and Wales in the average number of years people will live beyond their current age measured by "period life expectancy".

Health life expectancy data by upper tier local authorities is available via the following link: Healthy Life Expectancy at Birth for Upper Tier Local Authorities, England: 2011 to 2013. This is the latest release and shows the proportion of life spent in good health, broken down for counties, London boroughs, unitary authorities and metropolitan districts.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to produce life expectancy data at ward level. The sample sizes that would be involved in an answer to this request would be very small and could prove to be disclosive. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to release personal information. Personal information is any information held by the Board for statistical purposes that could identify an individual or a body corporate. As disclosure of the requested information is prohibited by another enactment, the information is considered exempt by Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). Section 44 is an absolute exemption, so no test of the public interest is required.

5. The number of people who smoke across Sheffield

Please see the following publication: Adult smoking habits in England, which was produced in collaboration with Public Health England. Please also see subnational data in the following dataset, which accompanies this publication. Smoking habits in the UK and its constituent countries.

Unfortunately, we would also not be able to produce this data at a ward level, owing to the same issue with small sample sizes outlined in our answer to question 4. Consequently, this information is also exempt under Section 44 of the FOIA 2000, as the SRSA prohibits the disclosure of information which could identify an individual.

6. Obesity rates spatially across Sheffield's wards

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on obesity rates. As above, NHS Digital may be better placed to help with this.
