Thank you for your enquiry on financial crimes against the elderly.

The crime statistics data we publish primarily come from two sources: The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and Police Recorded Crime (PRC). The CSEW is a face-to-face survey in which people resident in households in England and Wales are asked about their experiences of crime in the 12 months prior to the interview. PRC data are collected by the 43 territorial police forces of England and Wales, plus the British Transport Police, and do not include crimes that have not been reported to the police or incidents that the police do not record.

We publish annual CSEW estimates of the number of incidents, incidence rates and prevalence rates of fraud, theft and robbery in our Crime in England and Wales appendix tables (tables A1, A2 and A3). Whilst these do not include breakdowns by age of the victim, our property crime tables do include estimates of the proportion of adults who were victims of fraud, theft and robbery by age group (see tables 6, 8 and 10).

Whilst we do produce annual estimates of domestic abuse, we do not collect information on whether the respondent experienced financial abuse specifically.

Police recorded crime data on fraud, theft and robbery can be found in table A4 of the Crime in England and Wales appendix tables. This does not include a breakdown by age group. Police recorded crime data are provided to us by the Home Office. It may be that the Home Office can help you further. They can be contacted at: crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

We do not hold information on charges, court proceedings or custodial sentences. The Ministry of Justice publish statistics on this, and it may be that they can help you further. They can be contacted at: ESD@justice.gov.uk.

If you would like any further assistance, please email us at CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
