I am writing to ask if you have collated information on the UK’s ethnic goods market. I have looked on your website but have been unable to find it. Ethnic goods retailers can be found in many UK towns e.g Southall, Leicester. Birmingham, Ilford, Bradford, Manchester etc. I would like to request the following information by email.

Do you have any statistics available that can quantify the following:

  • the number of UK businesses that retail or wholesale ethnic products for example food, clothing etc (but excluding restaurants and takeaways etc)
  • the size of the UK’s ethnic goods market
  • the value of ethnic goods being imported into the UK
  • the contribution of the sale of ethnic goods to the UK economy

Preferably annually for 2012-2015 but if that is too big a time frame then simply 2014-2015.

We said

ONS is unable to provide the information requested because it does not collect or hold information on ethnic goods retailers. This is because ONS uses the 2007 Standard Industrial Classification to classify a business activity to the appropriate sector. Currently there are no definitions of an ethnic good or specific classification for an ethnic goods retailer within Section G, Division 47 of the 2007 Standard Industrial Classification.
