Thank you for your enquiry regarding employment and unemployment statistics for Manchester.

We produce labour market statistics for local areas from the Annual Population Survey (APS). The APS is a household sample survey which categorises individuals to labour market status in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) definitions based on responses to interview.

You have requested both employment and unemployment rates for males and females aged 16 years and over. It is worth being aware that whilst the normal headline measure for the unemployment rate is based on those 16 years and over, usually we would quote the employment rate based on those aged 16 to 64 years. Consequently, we have included both the figure that you requested and the equivalent headline measure.

All of the quoted statistics are available from the APS datasets published on our Nomis website; https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/

The table below gives the unemployment and employment rates for men and women in the Manchester local authority area, for the twelve-month period January to December 2017.
