Employment

Estimates of the total number of people in employment in the UK whose occupation is a social worker are published in the "Employment by Occupation (EMP04)" dataset on the ONS web-site, at the following address:

http://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/datasets/employmentbyoccupationemp04

The estimates are available from 2001 onwards and are provided by gender. A summary table of the relevant figures taken from this dataset is attached. Equivalent estimates at a subnational level are not available. The only available estimates at a subnational level are from the 2011 Census and are contained in the following tables supplied in response to an ad hoc request in January 2015:

The identification of social workers is made using the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2010. The category required is code 2442 which is within the minor group headed "Welfare Professionals". It is described as follows:

Social workers provide information, advice and support to those who are socially excluded or are experiencing crisis; they protect the welfare of vulnerable groups including children, young people, people with disabilities, elderly people and people who are mentally or physically ill, and they may specialise in specific areas of work. Social work is a regulated profession and practitioners must be registered with the appropriate statutory body. To register a social worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. Non-graduates must undertake a three-year degree in social work; graduates with relevant experience may take a two-year post-graduate diploma/Masters degree.

Estimates of social workers by public, private and voluntary sector are not available.

Annual Earnings

Average earnings estimates for social workers are available from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) and its predecessor the New Earnings Survey (NES) back to 1990. Median and mean annual earnings estimates by sex for 1999 to 2015 (the latest ASHE data available) can be found in Table 14.7a of the Table 14 zip file at the following link:

http://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/earningsandworkinghours/datasets/occupation4digitsoc2010ashetable14

From 2011, social workers are identified according to the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2010 as code 2442. Before 2011 the estimates are based on SOC 2000, for which social workers were grouped with probation officers and have the code 293.

The same information is also available by region of the UK in Table 15.7a of the Table 15 zip file at the following link:

http://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/earningsandworkinghours/datasets/regionbyoccupation4digitsoc2010ashetable15

1999 is the first year that annual earnings information was collected in NES. Before then only weekly/hourly estimates are available. For the years 1997 and 1998 these can be found at the links above. For 1990 to 1996 the only estimates available are mean weekly/hourly earnings for full-time employees by sex (but not by region). These can be found as scanned images in the ad hoc request published at the following link:

The above earnings estimates are not available at lower levels of detail such as for local authorities or cities.
