You asked
I have been looking at your annual business survey and have been able to access employee numbers and business numbers within the agriculture sector. However I would like to ask further detailed information that contains this data on a sector by sector basis.
Ideally I am looking for this data over the last 5 years (2009–2014) and for it to show the number of employees working within each of the following sectors as well as the number of businesses in operation:
Milling wheat for bread
Asparagus
Potatoes
Apples
Cider
Barley for the production of beer
Strawberries
Peas
Carrots

Thank you for your recent interest in the Annual Business Survey (ABS). The ABS covers approximately two thirds of the economy in terms of Gross Value Added. With respect to the agriculture sector the ABS only covers hunting, forestry, fishing and the support activities to agriculture. The remainder of the sector is not included within the ABS, which includes crop and animal production.
As a result we are unable to provide any information on the number of employees for the industries you have requested as these are not within the scope of the survey. Comparable GVA figures for the rest of Agriculture sector not covered by the ABS (which includes crop and animal production) are available in Chapter 3 (Table 3.2) of the Agriculture in the United Kingdom release published annually by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and shows a value of £9,922 million for 2014. DEFRA collect and publish a wide ranging set of statistics on the agriculture sector so would advise these would be an approporiate department to contact to provide you with the required information.
