You asked

I would like to request information in relation to domestic violence/intimate partner violence in the UK in the last ten years ending in March 2018:

  1. Prevalence of domestic abuse/intimate partner violence in the last 10 year among all women in the UK aged 16 to 74;

  2. Prevalence of domestic abuse/intimate partner violence in the last 10 year among women aged 16 to 74 with China as their country of birth.

Please could each data set be broken down to year and also contain both national and regional prevalence rate?

Thank you for your enquiry.

Data on offences recorded by the police that were flagged as being domestic-abuse related in the last three financial years in England and Wales (the earliest point from which the police have been flagging such offences) are published in table F5 of our ‘Crime in England and Wales, year ending March 2018’ release and are available here: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesotherrelatedtables

Please note that this covers offences against all victims; we do not hold these data broken down by the age, sex, or country of birth of the victim, so we cannot provide this information for women aged 16 to 74, including those born in China. The Home Office are responsible for the collection of these data and may be able to provide further breakdowns.

Data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW; which does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland) on domestic abuse experienced by women aged 16 to 59 in England and Wales in the last ten financial years are published in table S35 of our aforementioned ‘Crime in England and Wales, year ending March 2018’ release and are available here: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesannualsupplementarytables.

Please note that prior to April 2017, questions on domestic abuse / intimate personal violence within the CSEW were only asked of adults aged 16 to 59, so data for women aged 16 to 74 are only available for the latest financial year (ending March 2018) and are presented in table S35.

Although we do collect information within the CSEW relating to the victim’s country of birth and their region of residence, these data do not currently exist in the format requested. It may be possible to extract these data from the source survey data, but given the scale of work involved it is likely that this service will be chargeable. If you would like to find out more about requesting this additional analysis, please contact the ONS Centre for Crime and Justice at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk.

The data previously referred to only cover England and Wales; we do not hold crime survey data or data on police recorded crime covering the whole of the UK.

Crime-related data for Scotland are published by the Scottish Government and are available here: https://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Crime-Justice.

Police recorded crime data for Northern Ireland are published by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and are available here https://www.psni.police.uk/inside-psni/Statistics/; data from the Northern Ireland Crime Survey are published by the Department of Justice and are available here: https://www.justice-ni.gov.uk/articles/northern-ireland-crime-survey.
