Thank you for your request for information on domestic abuse broken down by area. We publish data on domestic abuse annually in our ‘Focus on Violent Crime and Sexual Offences’ publication. Below is a link to the Appendix tables from the most recent release of this publication (‘Focus on Violent Crime and Sexual Offences, year ending March 2015’), which contain estimates of the numbers of males and females who were victims of domestic abuse in the years April 2010 to March 2011, April 2011 to March 2012, April 2012 to March 2013, April 2013 to March 2014 and April 2014 to March 2015 (table 4.07).

These are based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) which is a sample survey of the population resident in households and includes incidents which have and have not been reported to the police. The CSEW is not designed to produce sub-national estimates and the sample size is not large enough to provide breakdowns by county or local authority areas.

The ONS also publish data based on crimes that have been reported to and recorded by the police. The police recorded crime series is an offence based system and domestic abuse is not separately identifiable as it will be recorded under the relevant criminal offence, such as grievous or actual bodily harm. However, we do publish data on the number of domestic abuse incidents recorded police force area, which can be found in table 4.08. However these figures are not broken down by gender. Again, the figures published contain data for April 2010 to March 2011, April 2011 to March 2012, April 2012 to March 2013, April 2013 to March 2014 and April 2014 to March 2015.

Further breakdowns of domestic abuse recorded by the police may be available from the individual police forces themselves.

We do not hold any data on refuge centres, so will be unable to provide the information you requested on these.

For future reference, you do not need to use a Freedom of Information request to ask for data. It is usually quicker to simply email us at CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
