I would like to know the amount of divorces, across the UK, filed subsequent to humanist ceremonies having been performed. I am interested in divorces filed in relation to weddings performed since the year 2000.
Thank you for your inquiry about the number of divorces following a humanist marriage ceremony. We do not hold the requested information.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is responsible for publishing demographic statistics on marriages and divorces taking place in England and Wales. Unfortunately we do not hold any information on divorces following a humanist marriage ceremony.
Marriage statistics are derived from information recorded when marriages are registered as part of civil registration which is a legal requirement. Ceremonies conducted by a humanist celebrant are not legally recognised in England and Wales. To ensure the marriage is legally recognised, the couple will have a civil marriage ceremony as well. The marriage register will only show that a civil ceremony took place and contains no information on whether a humanist ceremony was also conducted.
Our divorce statistics are derived from information recorded by Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service during the divorce process. Figures represent both divorces and annulments that took place in England and Wales. The type of marriage ceremony conducted is not recorded as part of the divorce process.
