Deaths within 28 days, 7 days and 1 day after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine

Please supply the following information:

1. How many people have died within 28 days of a covid vaccine?
2. How many people have died within one week or less of a covid vaccine?
3. How many people have died within twenty-four hours of a covid vaccine?
4. What is your definition of vaccinated?
5. How many people died from Covid19 in the UK pre vaccination roll out? and how many people have died in the UK from Covid19 post vaccination roll out?

We said

​Thank you for your enquiry regarding deaths and the COVID-19 vaccination.

We do not hold analysis broken down by 24 hours, 7 days, or 28 days after vaccination. We have used 21 days after vaccination as this is when the vaccine starts being effective. To provide all cause deaths and deaths involving COVID-19 at 1, 7 or 28 days after vaccination, this data would need to be created and public authorities are not obligated to create information to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

For deaths involving COVID-19 or all cause deaths after receipt of the COVID-19 vaccination, we hold the following analysis Deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status, England: deaths occurring between 2 January and 2 July 2021 which is an analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status that occurred between 1 January and 2 July 2021 in England.

This publication includes weekly age standardised mortality rates for deaths involving COVID-19 by vaccination status and a detailed analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 which occurred in fully vaccinated individuals.

This is the latest analysis we hold; whilst we now hold mortality data up to October 2021, we have not yet completed analysis on this. We are planning a future publication which has a provisional release date of 1 November 2021. The final publication date will be announced on our Release Calendar.

Definition of vaccinated

COVID-19 vaccination status is determined on the date of death occurrence if a death has occurred, and on the last day of each week if not.

Possible values are:

• unvaccinated
• vaccinated with the first dose only, date of death/last day of week is within 21 days of vaccination
• vaccinated with the first dose only, date of death/last day of week is 21 days or more after vaccination
• vaccinated with both the first and second dose, date of death/last day of week is date of second vaccination or later

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
