Thank you for your enquiry.

We publish mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales, using the information provided on the death certificate.

Underlying cause of death is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). - Cardiovascular disease (unspecified) is coded to I51.6
- Metabolic disorders are coded to E70-E90
- Respiratory diseases are coded to J00-J99
- Unnatural causes are coded to V01-Y98 and U50.9

If you are interested in a broader categorisation of heart diseases, diseases of the circulatory system are coded to I00-I99. The definitions of the specific causes included in this chapter, along with their corresponding ICD codes are available online: http://apps.who.int/classifications/icd10/browse/2014/en#/IX

For 2013 to 2017, the total number of deaths, by underlying cause is available from our explorable dataset: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73

For previous years, this data is available from table 5 of our deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR) publication: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables

Whilst schizophrenia may be mentioned on the death certificate, this would only likely be the case if it was believed to have been a contributing factor to the death in some way. Therefore, providing the number of deaths where schizophrenia was mentioned on the death certificate may be an underestimate of the true number of deaths of persons with a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Other special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate). You can contact the team directly at: vsob@ons.gov.uk
