FOI-2023-1077

You asked

I would like to know the number of under 30 year olds who have died from a heart attack this year compared to previous years.

We said

Thank you for your request.

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or
b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 cause code for acute myocardial infarction is I21 and subsequent myocardial infarction is I22.

We hold the following analysis for 2022 Deaths registered summary statistics, England and Wales .

Sheet 3 provides the number of deaths registered in England and Wales by sex, age group and ONS short list of cause of death code.

In 2022 there were 20,557 deaths due to acute myocardial infarction in England and Wales with 19 registered for the 0 to 29 age group.

Please see the associated download accompanying this response named 'Deaths due to acute myocardial infarction 2013 to 2021'.

If you would like to use NOMIS for further disaggregation of the data, please find instructions below.

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

Data for 2022 will be available in NOMIS in August/September 2023.

We have not conducted analysis of deaths registered in 2023 by this specific cause, however our Monthly Mortality Analysis does provide monthly leading causes of death.

Further analysis is available to order via our bespoke services route. These extracts are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy.
