You asked

I'd like to know how many registered deaths were caused by the ingestion of cannabis or as a direct result of cannabis use in the UK from 2000-2020.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We publish data on Deaths Related to Drug Poisoning, England and Wales. Table 3 in the reference tables provide counts of death registrations where specific drugs have been mentioned on death certificates (Row CW to DB specifically refer to deaths where cannabis was mentioned) from 1993 to 2019.

2020 data will be available when we publish our Deaths related to drug poisoning, England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk) in late 2021.

Please note, if you would like any further analysis related to this topic, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on deaths involving drugs 2019-1993 along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
