FOR REF: FOI/2023/4824

You asked

I would like to request data about heart attack deaths from 2015-2019 or 2021. I would like a breakdown by month.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We hold mortality data for England and Wales, based on the information collected at death registration. The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

When myocardial Infarction (heart attack) is recorded as the underlying cause on the death certificate, it is assigned the following ICD-10 codes:

  • I21 - Acute myocardial infarction

  • I22 - Subsequent myocardial infarction

  • I23 - Complications following acute myocardial infarction

Numbers of deaths by underlying cause (ICD-10 code), sex, five-year age group and area of usual residence, for England and Wales, 2013 to 2021, are available via the NOMIS webservice.

Please see the associated download from NOMIS named 'Heart_attack_deaths_2015_to_2021.xlsx'. This provides deaths registered where the above ICD-10 codes are the underlying cause of death in England and Wales from 2015 to 2021.

Our latest provisional death registration data for England and Wales in 2022 are available in our weekly deaths publication. We publish provisional data as part of our monthly mortality analysis publication, which includes the top ten leading causes of death. Finalised death registration data for 2022 will be released in July 2023 in our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS.

Should you wish to download other data from our NOMIS webservice, please see the following instructions:

  • Select the geography - (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)

  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands

  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

If these outputs do not meet your needs, we can create a user requested dataset.  Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
