Thank you for your request.

The mortality data published by ONS are derived from the formal process of death registration. Deaths from COVID-19 may include cases where the doctor completing the death certificate diagnosed possible cases of COVID-19, for example, where this was based on relevant symptoms but no test for the virus was conducted. This differs to the data published on the GOV.UK website which are counts of all causes of death where a positive test for COVID-19 has been confirmed.

We do not have access to data on when the test was conducted as this is not recorded on the death certificate. Deaths with a positive test are coded using the ICD10 code U0.71 and those with suspected COVID-19 but no test has been conducted are coded with ICD10 U0.72.

We do not hold data on NHS trusts. ONS mortality data are published in line with the National Statistics Postcode Lookup which is based on the area of usual residence of the deceased. You may be able to obtain deaths by trust from NHS digital. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing deaths in the Brighton area due to COVID-19 where there were no pre-existing conditions.

In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

We do hold the following dataset, which may be of use to you: Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board. This includes provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales, including deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19), by local authority, health board and place of death in the latest weeks for which data are available. These are figures where COVID-19 was listed on the death certificate as the underlying cause or mentioned as a contributing factor. Here you can view COVID-19 deaths in Brighton. The occurrence tabs in the 2020 edition of this dataset will be updated weekly at the same time as the 2021 edition.

1 August to 30 September 2020 are included in weeks 32 to 40. For ease, we have copied out the figures included in the 2020 dataset:

In the tables labelled 'Registrations - Pivot table' and 'Occurrences - Pivot table', you can see how the mortality figures vary week on week, using the drop-down toggle and filtering on the week number and cause of death options.

For clarity: The filter/drop-down on the pivot tables for 'All-causes' does not contain COVID-19 deaths. By default, both options are ticked. If you were to untick the COVID-19 option it would deduct from the total deaths, leaving you with deaths from all other causes. Additionally, if both were ticked and you unticked All-causes, it would leave you with the total number of COVID-19 deaths.
