You asked

During March 2020 to current 5th of March 2021, how many have died from covid in the UK?

I can see that it states "death for ANY REASON within 28days of testing positive" So that means they could of died of something else but because of that test it be put down as Covid.

How many died of COVID alone with no other health issues please.

Thank you for your request.

The data to which you are referring (deaths within 28 days of a positive test) are produced by Public Health England and published via the government's COVID-19 dashboard.

Our data is different to that produced by PHE. You can read a blog by Professor John Newton of Public Health England about the complexities of counting COVID-19 deaths and the different methods used. Please contact coronavirus-tracker@phe.gov.uk for queries about this data.

For the UK as a whole, we report weekly headline figures for deaths from COVID-19 in our Deaths Registered Weekly for England and Wales publication, using data obtained from National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). Please refer to Part 6 of the bulletin for this information.

We do not hold COVID-19 mortality data in any further level of detail for the UK as a whole. If you would like to obtain further breakdowns of COVID-19 mortality information for Scotland and Northern Ireland, you will need to contact NRS and NISRA at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We report the number of deaths 'due to' COVID-19 (where it was recorded on the death certificate as the underlying cause of death) and deaths 'involving' COVID-19 (where it was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate) in England and Wales. Our latest figures are available in the provisional weekly deaths publication. A breakdown of deaths due to and involving COVID-19 are available to download in Figure 2 of this publication.

We also report the number of deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales in 2020, by leading cause and main pre-existing condition (including where COVID-19 was the sole condition mentioned on the death certificate) in our Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales publication and in the following dataset: Pre-existing conditions of those who died due to COVID-19.

Figures for January to March 2021 will be available in the next update of this publication on 22 April 2021.

Our provisional weekly deaths are derived from the formal process of death registration and may include cases where the doctor completing the death certificate diagnosed possible cases of COVID-19, for example, where this was based on relevant symptoms but no test for the virus was conducted. Guidance notes for doctors to follow when certifying a death, including best practice and the Coronavirus Act 2020, are available here:  Completing a medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD).

From 29 April 2020, the DHSC started to publish their COVID-19 daily surveillance figures for the UK, a new series that uses improved data for England produced by Public Health England (PHE). These figures provide a count of all deaths where a positive test for COVID-19 has been confirmed, wherever that death has taken place, a change from previously reporting only confirmed COVID-19 deaths in hospitals. A statement was published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), providing more detail of the changes.

On 12 August 2020, the PHE data series was revised to include two measures: deaths of positively tested individuals where the death occurred within 28 days and deaths within 60 days of a positive test. More information on these changes can be found in their technical summary (PDF, 854KB).
