Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to request data related to deaths caused by Silicosis lung disease from 2020 to the most recent data held. More specifically, how many deaths have there been each year from 2020 to the most recent data held that had at least one of the causes of death listed as Silicosis lung disease?

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. The information you have requested is available from our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice. This service will provide you with the number of deaths registered for 2020 to 2024. 

Instructions for use of this service:  

  • Select geography (England and Wales, regional, or by local authority)  

  • Select age (all ages, or five-year age bands)  

  • Select gender (total, or male or female)  

  • Select rates (all births, rates, or percentage of population, for example)  

  • Select the ICD10 code for the underlying cause of death  

  • Select format (Excel or CSV, for example)  

The ICD 10 code for pneumoconiosis due to dust containing silica. Including silicotic fibrosis of lung is J62. 

Data for deaths registered in 2025 has not yet been finalised. The provisional number of deaths due to pneumoconiosis due to dust containing silica is 7. 

As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
