The ICD-10 has been used to code cause of death since 2001. From 1979 until 2000 cause of death was coded using ICD-9 and this data is not directly comparable to ICD-10.

For previous years this data can be obtained from the customer services team of the Vital Statistics Outputs Branch. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
