Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with access to the data you have requested from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) as these are personal information. Even with direct identifiers removed from our datasets, the data are still not anonymous.  Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 makes it an offence to release personal information. This is any information held by the Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or body corporate. Because disclosure is prohibited by another enactment, we find that s.44 of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) applies.

In terms of accessing the underlying data, access to a secure-level version of the CSEW can be obtained through a Research Data Centre (RDC). RDCs are secure environments that provide accredited researchers with full access to de-identified datasets for approved research projects.

The CSEW is available within the Office for National Statistics' RDC (called the Secure Research Service) and also through the UK Data Service's RDC (called the Secure Lab).

For more information on how to become an approved researcher or access data through the Secure Research Service, you can visit the following webpage: https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/whatwedo/statistics/requestingstatistics/approvedresearcherscheme.

For more information on how to access the CSEW through the Secure Lab, you can visit the following webpage: https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/use-data/secure-lab.aspx.

If you have any crime-related queries in the future, please email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
