FOI Request: FOI/2022/3949

You asked

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request for the following information, broken down by local authority or by Police Force Area, for the past 10 years starting with 2022 if available:

1. The number of drivers with ongoing driving disqualifications who have been caught still driving.

2. The number of drivers caught driving dangerously (according to police definition).

3. The number of drivers caught parking dangerously (either by obstruction or by another suitable equivalent measure).

4. The number of drivers caught driving without valid insurance.

5. The number of drivers caught failing to stop after an accident.

6. The number of drivers caught failing to report an accident.

7. All of the above who have been convicted as a result.

I note that data on driving dangerously is held on a country level in the following dataset:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesappendixtables

And that it is possible to break it down to the requested level in this dataset:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/policeforceareadatatables

Accordingly, it is my hope that some of the above data requests are available on a similar level.

We said

Thank you for your request on driving offences and convictions.

Unfortunately, we do not hold all the specific data you have requested.

Police recorded crime data published as part of our Crime in England and Wales quarterly bulletins provide a breakdown of driving offences under the categories of "dangerous driving", "causing death or serious injury by dangerous driving", "causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs" and "causing death by driving: unlicensed or disqualified or uninsured drivers" in Appendix Table A4.

We do not hold a breakdown of these offences according to the classification you have requested.

The Home Office holds data about dangerous driving offences, broken down by Police Force Areas and Community Safety Partnerships which might be of help. These can be found in the Police recorded crime and outcomes open data tables. Home Office are also contactable by e-mail on CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk and may be able to help you further with your request.

Statistics relating to convictions are recorded and held by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). They can be contacted at the following email address: ESD@justice.gov.uk.

Lastly, the Department for Transport also publishes data on road traffic accidents and may be able to help with your request as well.

If you have any other crime-related queries in the future, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
