You asked

Since the government now wants to vaccinate 16 and 17 year olds, please supply how many children have died of COVID-19.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Using our Deaths Registered Weekly in England and Wales 2021 publication, from 2 January 2021 to 13 August 2021 there have been the following deaths in 5-year age groups.

Data for 2020 can be found in the recent publication, Deaths due to COVID-19, registered in England and Wales: 2020

Notes:
  1. Age-standardised mortality rates per 100,000 people, standardised to the 2013 European Standard Population. Monthly rates are adjusted to allow for comparisons with annual rates.
  2. Figures are for deaths registered rather than deaths occurring in the calender year.
  3. Figures are for deaths registered rather than deaths occurring in the calender year.
  4. The lower and upper 95% confidence limits have been provided (LCI and UCI). These form a confidence interval, which is a measure of the statistical precision of an estimate and shows the range of uncertainty around the estimated figure. As a general rule, if the confidence interval around one figure overlaps with the interval around another, we cannot say with certainty that there is more than a chance difference between the two figures.
  5. Rates marked with u are unreliable due to small numbers of deaths.
  6. : denotes data are not available; age-standardised rates are not provided for categories with fewer than 10 deaths.

We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death as COVID-19 and we use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.
