Since the government now wants to vaccinate 16 and 17 year olds, please supply how many children have died of COVID-19.

Using our Deaths Registered Weekly in England and Wales 2021 publication, from 2 January 2021 to 13 August 2021 there have been the following deaths in 5-year age groups.

- Age-standardised mortality rates per 100,000 people, standardised to the 2013 European Standard Population. Monthly rates are adjusted to allow for comparisons with annual rates.
- Figures are for deaths registered rather than deaths occurring in the calender year.
- Figures are for deaths registered rather than deaths occurring in the calender year.
- The lower and upper 95% confidence limits have been provided (LCI and UCI). These form a confidence interval, which is a measure of the statistical precision of an estimate and shows the range of uncertainty around the estimated figure. As a general rule, if the confidence interval around one figure overlaps with the interval around another, we cannot say with certainty that there is more than a chance difference between the two figures.
- Rates marked with u are unreliable due to small numbers of deaths.
- : denotes data are not available; age-standardised rates are not provided for categories with fewer than 10 deaths.
We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death as COVID-19 and we use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.
