Contributions to and from the European Union

You asked

Under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, as my MP, please supply the following data:

For the years 1973 through to 2016

1) Total UK tax payer funded contribution to the EEC/EU, £

2) Total grants returned to the UK by the EEC/EU, £

3) Total gross trade imports into the UK from the EEC/EU, £

4) Total gross trade exports from the UK into the EEC/EU, £

5) Total number of EEC/EU migrants working in the UK

6) Total number of UK migrant working (not retired) in the EEC/EU

7) Contribution of EEC/EU migrants to the UK in terms of tax paid, £

8) Total cost to the UK tax payer of EEC/EU migrants in terms of all welfare and health benefits

We said

1) and 2) Total UK contributions to/receipts from the EU are published annually in the Pink Book Table 9.9 for 1999 to 2014. This is the latest available data and no breakdown by country is available before 1999.

3) and 4) Total UK imports and exports with the EU are published quarterly in Table B6 of the UK Economic Accounts for 1999 to 2015. This is the latest available data and no breakdown by country is available before 1999.

5) The primary source of the information requested is the dataset published by the ONS entitled, "Employment by country of birth and nationality: EMP06". It is available from the ONS web-site via this link:

A copy of the published Excel table is attached.

The column headed "Total EU (EU27)" provides the total number of people in employment in the UK aged 16 and over from a current EU country (excluding the UK). The information is sourced from the Labour Force Survey and is published on a country of birth basis as well as a nationality basis. The time series relates to the current (2016) EU membership throughout and goes back in time as far as 1997. Estimates from this source prior to 1997 are not published and are not available on a comparable basis. The estimates relate to people living permanently in the UK in private households. Consequently they exclude any short-term/temporary migrants and also any migrants living in communal establishments, such as hostels or hotels.
