How do I access UK Census records from the 1900-30 period?

Thank you for your request.

Historic census forms from 1841-1911 are available to view free on site at the National Archives in Kew (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/). They are also available online from the National Archive's official partner sites Ancestry.co.uk and Findmypast.co.uk who have transcribed records and loaded them on to their websites.

With regards to accessing census data from 1921 on, the information that the Office for National Statistics holds is subject to the provisions of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007. These provisions state that we are unable to disclose personal census information while it remains in the custody of the UK Statistics Authority. Current Government policy is that the UK Statistics Authority should retain all census returns from the 1921 Census onwards, for 100 years. Provisions in the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (section 44) state that information is exempt if its disclosure is prohibited by, or under, any enactment. Therefore, we are unable to release information from censuses from 1921 onwards.
