Thank you for your enquiry requesting deaths by specific ICD-10 code (heart conditions) for 2015 to 2021 in England and Wales.

2015 to 2020 data

All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2019 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The following ICD-10 codes are available for deaths involving circulatory system.

  • I05-I09 - Chronic Rheumatic Heart disease
  • I20-I25 - Ischaemic Heart Disease.
  • I26 - I28 Pulmonary Heart disease
  • I30 - I52 Other forms of heart disease, including Pericarditis, Endocarditis, Cardiomyopathy, and acute myocarditis

Please see the attached Excel workbook, which provides mortality data from the above conditions broken down by 5-year age-band. This has been extracted from our NOMIS webservice, with the above ICD-10 codes for England and Wales from 2015 to 2020.

To note, if this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output for you. Information on Deaths registered in England and Wales by specific ICD-10 code, as either underlying cause of death or contributory mention for 2015 to 2020, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). 2021 data

We publish deaths registered in 2021 by leading causes of death, which includes Ischaemic heart disease in Table 11a and 11b of our Monthly Mortality analysis. This publication will be updated in November 2021.

However, unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing the requested age breakdown for deaths from all heart conditions by age. In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create a bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Our NOMIS webservice will be updated with 2021 data once the data are finalised in the summer of 2022. This will include a breakdown by 5-year age band.
