You asked

I've tried to research the cancer deaths for 2021 & 2022 but can't find anything. Could you help me out with this please?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

For deaths due to cancers there is a variety of ICD_10 codes which can be used to refer to specific cancers. Alternatively there is a leading cause code for cancer which incorporates all cancers.

LC02 is the leading cause code for all malignant neoplasm. We have included data for 2020 and 2021 below.

2020 Mortality statistics

2021 Mortality statistics

Our NOMIS webservice provides a breakdown of deaths for ICD-10 code by requested geography, sex and age. Using the following instructions, you can request your own data breakdown.

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.

  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

We have not conducted analysis of 2022 data yet, as this is still provisional. This is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths that have been referred for Coroner investigation. This will be published in the summer of 2023.

We do report on provisional mortality data, including leading causes of death in our Monthly Mortality analysis publication, but this will only include the top 10 leading causes of death, not all cancer deaths.

Deaths caused by cancer in 2022 can be produced via our bespoke analysis services. Special extracts and tabulations of data are available to order from the HALE customer Services team. User requested data sets are subject to disclosure control, legal frame works, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging policy. Please also note, this data is still provisional and would be subject to change. If you would like to obtain a quote for this service, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
