Thank you for your enquiry.
Unfortunately we would be unable to provide you with the number of people who definitely celebrated a birthday during the lockdown period. In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held. It would also be difficult to correctly estimate the number of people who had their birthday in a set period because:
The person who was born may no longer be alive now
Our births data does not account for migration
However, we can provide you with our data on births.
ONS are responsible for publishing births statistics for births registered in England and Wales, but not Scotland or Northern Ireland. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for publishing the number of births registered in Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
The information you are interested in can be found in our Birth Characteristics publication. Table 2 shows the number of live births by month of occurrence from 1938 to 2018 and Table 18 provides the number of live births by date from 1995 to 2018.
