You asked

I understand the census 2021 should help with these stats but in order to help a study I am doing which will be due in April 2021 can I request the following statistics on BAME populations.

What is the total BAME population in the UK and what are the breakdowns per country?

What are the breakdowns of BAME population percentage by county?

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding population estimates data by ethnicity at national and county level.

At the Office for National Statistics, we are responsible for the census for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Official estimates of the population by ethnic group produced from census data are available at national and subnational level on the Nomis website. Please note that the 2011 Census data is our most recent official statistic for population by ethnic group.

The following tables may be of particular interest to you:

  • Ethnic group [KS201UK] - provides information about the ethnic group of the usual resident population of UK as at census day, 27 March 2011, by the 10-way classification (though the classification is less detailed, it also includes Scottish and Northern Irish geographies).
  • Ethnic group [KS201EW] - provides information about the ethnic group of the usual resident population of England and Wales as at census day, 27 March 2011, by the 18-way classification.
  • Ethnic group (detailed) [QS211EW] - This dataset provides a more detailed breakdown.

Alternatively, the Research report on population estimates by ethnic group and religion and the accompanying Population characteristics research tables provides population estimates at national, regional and local authority level for England and Wales by ethnic group and religion for 2016.

Please note: the estimates provided in the 'Population characteristics research tables' represent illustrative estimates of the population by ethnic group and religion. These data are not official statistics. They were produced as part of research work into developing methods for producing population estimates by these characteristics between censuses, research which reflects ONS' understanding of the user need for this data. For more information about the methodology used to produce these data, please consult the accompanying Research report.

Additionally, the Population denominators by broad ethnic group and for White British, local authorities in England and Wales: 2011 to 2019 dataset provides population estimates at local authority level for England and Wales by broad ethnic group, sex and single year of age from 2011 to 2019.

Please note: These denominators are neither National Statistics nor standard published experimental statistics and have not been produced using methods which have undergone formal Quality Assurance. They have been produced specifically for use as part of the Race Disparity Audit, following discussion with the Race Disparity Unit of their specific requirements and timeframe. For more information about the methodology used to produce this data, please consult the Supporting information document.
