FOI Reference: FOI-2026-3780

You asked

I am requesting recorded crime data under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for assaults occurring at individual London Underground stations during the following financial years:

  • 1 April 2019 - 31 March 2020

  • 1 April 2020 - 31 March 2021

  • 1 April 2021 - 31 March 2022

  • 1 April 2022 - 31 March 2023

  • 1 April 2023 - 31 March 2024

  • 1 April 2024 - 31 March 2025

  • 1 April 2025 - 31 March 2026

I am seeking to investigate trends in assaults across the London Underground network and identify which stations have the highest numbers of recorded incidents. Please provide the data in Excel or CSV format, broken down by individual station, year and offence type, including the following categories where available:

  1. Common assault.

  2. Actual bodily harm (ABH).

  3. Grievous bodily harm (GBH) and other serious assaults.

  4. Other recorded assault-related offences.

For each category, please provide the number of recorded incidents at each London Underground station for each financial year.

Where available, I would also be grateful for the following information:

  • Whether the incident occurred at a station or on a train.

  • Whether the victim was a passenger, another member of the public or a member of railway staff.

  • The sex and race of each victim (if available)

Please include London Underground stations only, excluding London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, National Rail and bus services.

I am requesting aggregated statistical data only and do not require personal data, victim identities, case details or information that could identify individual victims.

If any of the requested information is not held, or cannot be provided in the requested format, please provide the closest available data, including any existing station-level crime datasets.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We produce data on crime primarily from two main sources:

  • Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW): a household victimisation survey that asks respondents about their experiences of crime, regardless of whether the incident was reported to the police.

  • Police recorded crime (from the Home Office): offences that are reported to and/or recorded by police forces in England and Wales.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the information you have requested. We do not hold data on recorded crimes at individual London Underground stations.

You may be interested in our Police Force Area data tables, which provide police recorded crime figures by offence group and police force area, including British Transport Police. However, this data is not held at individual London Underground station level and does not contain the additional breakdowns requested.

British Transport Police, who are responsible for policing the railways in Great Britain, may be able to assist you further with your request. Further information on making an FOI request can be found here: Accessing information | British Transport Police.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
