Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore we do not hold the requested information for the whole of the UK, only England and Wales. Scottish and Northern Irish data can be requested from NRS and NISRA at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

The NOMIS webservice provides deaths registered in England and Wales where an external cause, including accidents, are the underlying cause of death for 2019 to 2021.

The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. Using the ICD-10 look up there are numerous ICD-10 codes relating to accidents and external causes ranging from code V01 to X59. Further breakdown of these categories are available to select from NOMIS.

If you would like to obtain further disaggregation of the data from NOMIS, please see the following instruction for using this service:

We have not yet completed analysis of data for 2022 and this data is still provisional. This is to allow the inclusion of late registrations which are deaths that have been referred for Coroner investigation.

We can create a user requested dataset using provisional data, however this would be subject to change. User requested datasets are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resources and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging Policy.
