A short report comparing three measures of average life span: life expectancy at birth (mean age at death), median age at death and modal age at death.
All the figures used in the Report have been calculated using life table methodology. The life tables produced are period life tables. These are calculated using age-specific mortality rates for a given period, with no allowance for any actual or projected future changes in mortality. The life table has a hypothetical starting population of 100,000 people who are assumed to be subject throughout their lives to the mortality rates experienced in the year to which the life table relates.
