This release is the first publication of unrounded results from the 2011 Census of Population for England and Wales.
The release covers the population figures first published 16 July in the ‘2011 Census: Population and household estimates for Wales’ which were rounded to 100.
The figures contain the additional detail of single year of age by sex, previously published only at country level, and which are now available at unitary authority level.
This release precedes that of the mid-2011 population estimates that are based on these unrounded 2011 Census estimates.
The mid-2011 population estimates are due to be published 25 September.
Further information about the mid-2011 population estimates, including commentary, full details of the methodology used, and a detailed examination of the differences between the census and mid-2011 population estimates will accompany the mid-year population estimates.
Commentary and methodological documentation for the census population estimates was published 16 July 2012.
Further results from the 2011 Census will be released later in the year. Further information is available in the 2011 Census Output Prospectus.
This release, the '2011 Census Population and Household Estimates for Wales - unrounded estimates for the data published 16 July', is the first release of unrounded results from the 2011 Census of Population for England and Wales.
The release provides information about the usually resident population of Wales by age and sex, and also provides information on topics such as the number of households and the number of short-term residents. It is published alongside the '2011 Census Population and household estimates for England and Wales - unrounded figures for the data published 16 July'.
Results are presented for Wales and constituent unitary authorities. The estimates included are the unrounded companion figures to those first released in the 'Population and household estimates for Wales' on 16 July 2012, which were rounded to 100. This release also takes into account further information that has come to light as a result of finalising processing and further quality assurance. It also includes minor corrections that were made to the presentation of the data.
Tables equivalent to those published 16 July are included in this release, but with unrounded figures. Some additional detail is also included in some of the tables - single year of age by sex figures, previously published only at country level and which are now available for unitary authorities.
In addition to the tables included, the interactive population pyramids first published 16 July to help interpretation of the results have also been updated with the unrounded estimates published in this release.
New interactive maps providing views of specific characteristics of each local and unitary authority in the context of surrounding areas are also available. These characteristics include the population and household density of each area, and the change in population and number of households between 2001 and 2011.
These 2011 Census estimates precede those from the 2011 mid-year (30 June) population estimates which have been rebased to take account of the 2011 Census results rather than being rolled forward from the 2001 Census. The rebased estimates, published 25 September 2012, will also be available from the Office for National Statistics website.
In due course the mid-year population estimate series for 2002-2010 will also be rebased to reflect the results of the 2011 Census; the rebased national level mid-year population estimate series will be published by the end of 2012 and sub-national estimates will be released in spring 2013.
Further results from the census will be released later in the year, and statistics for the whole of the UK will be compiled and published by ONS after each of the three census offices in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland publishes the relevant data.
Further information about the census estimates, including details about the methodology used and information about how other population sub-groups are counted, and other defined, are available in the Definitions and supporting information.
Further information on the fitness for purpose of the statistics in this release can be found in the Quality and Methodology Information paper (157.6 Kb Pdf) .
Further information about the mid-year population estimates, including the latest published estimates (published 25 September), commentary, and details about the methodology used, are available in the Population Estimates for England and Wales.
These National Statistics are produced to high professional standards and released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
