The ONS Local service was established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in spring 2023. It was set up to work alongside the Subnational Statistics and Analysis division in response to the Levelling Up White Paper, which was announced in February 2022. This lays out plans to reduce regional inequality across a range of economic and social measures.

Alongside this, ONS Local provides support to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). They have provided us with additional funding to increase our capability across several workstreams. This is to support the development and dissemination of more timely, granular, and harmonised subnational statistics.

What we do

ONS Local is an analytical advisory service for local leaders. We have dedicated analysts based across the UK who ensure that local leaders have access to data, statistics and analysis, to support evidence-based decision-making across local government.

The ONS Local analytical service offer is based on five main pillars:

  • analytical
  • data
  • network
  • strategic
  • building capability

Analytical

We provide analytical advice and produce analysis ourselves where needed.

Data

The ONS and wider government produce a vast range of data, which can be difficult for some users to navigate. We support users to navigate the data landscape and access data platforms. We also connect them to expert advice at ONS for specific data sets.

Network

We encourage networking across councils and other stakeholders and organise events based on analytical themes and sharing knowledge. We also support existing networks as well as creating new networks in places where these connections may be lacking.

Strategic

We use our unique position within central government to understand, identify, and align priorities for both local and central decision-makers, alongside capturing user needs.

Building capability

We are working to create sustainable change in the long-term, by improving data capability in local government.

Where we work

The ONS Local team are based across the UK, with regional leads in the nine English Regions of:

  • North West
  • North East
  • Yorkshire and The Humber
  • East Midlands
  • East of England
  • West Midlands
  • South West
  • South East
  • London

There are also devolved liaison officers in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These officers work closely with our coherence team to ensure requests for information and user needs remain joined up. This is particularly important for UK-wide statistics on cross-topic areas produced from local and regional data.

Our team also includes a flexible pool of analysts to support with wider cross-cutting projects.

If you have an enquiry, contact the ONS Local team by emailing ons.local@ons.gov.uk

Events and workshops

We run a series of events, webinars and workshops to connect our users with the developments happening in subnational statistics.
