You asked

I am writing to politely request the following information under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA):

  1. How many overnight stays were there in hotels in the UK in 2019?
  2. How many overnight stays were there in hotels by international visitors in the UK in 2019

For clarity, on overnight stay would be defined as an individual staying in a hotel room or suite for one night.

Thank you for your queries and data request.

You have asked about data on the number of overnight hotel stays in the UK for 2019, both totals and the number of overnight stays by international visitors.

The International Passenger Survey does not collect data on domestic tourism and would be unable to provide the total overnight hotel stays. However, you can commission data for the number of overseas' residents stays in UK hotels as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to discuss the provision of this bespoke dataset, please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk to discuss your requirements further.

Alternatively, you may find your data requirements from the VisitBritain website here https://www.visitbritain.org/inbound-accommodation-research.
